Joseph Kao

Dr. Joseph Kao is a materials scientist, entrepreneur, and angel investor with deep expertise in AR/VR optical materials, 3D printing, and energy storage. He has led the commercialization of five high-impact inventions at Dow Chemical, Carbon 3D, Apple, and Meta, holding 15+ patents and 11 high-impact publications.

Now, Joseph is building a startup leveraging AI-driven magnetic sensor technology for grid asset monitoring, based on a Stanford breakthrough. Passionate about scaling transformative technologies, he also supports high-impact startups in AI infrastructure and energy/climate as an angel investor.

A Stanford Impact Founder Fellowship and Miller Social Change Leadership Award recipient, Joseph earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from UC Berkeley and his master’s in management (MSx) from Stanford GSB. Originally from Taiwan, he actively supports sustainability initiatives and enjoys hiking, tennis, traveling and exploring global cuisines.
